Honey

Ecker’s Apple Farm has Honey!

We were extremely fortunate in our honey endeavors in 2011!  Approximately 600 lbs. were extracted from our 18 hives at the beginning of October!  They are available for purchase in our retail store in those oh-so-darling honey bears!

Ah, the miracle of comb honey…

Each spring, we set out new, empty frames in our bee hives.  In the majority of these frames, we place a sheet of Duragilt, a fine comb-like structure with built-in support wires.  The bees love it; it’s a huge ‘head start’ and they begin to layer their own wax on the Duragilt and fill the sheet with their sweet honey.

However, we leave a few frames open in the top box of a couple hives in the hope that the bees will work extra hard to build their own structure and produce comb honey.  This year we were exceptionally lucky!  We had roughly 70 lbs. of comb honey that we sold at farmer’s markets and our retail store.  Check back next year to see if the bees got around to more comb honey during their busy season, spring pollination!
